Keeping the shelter open, reducing the
feral cat population through trap/spay/release, providing medical
care to sheltered and treated animals are all expensive. Our
2010 budget is $135,000. With less than 10% of that from the VI
Department of Agriculture by contract to Operate an Animal Shelter
and perform Animal Control duties. We
have calculated
the cost of these functions and note that we are seriously under
funded! We depend on our members and generous
donors to make up the difference. We have a long-term goal of a
shelter on land where we can provide boarding and clinic services, a
thrift shop, etc so that we become self sustaining and do not have
to depend on the following events for our survival. We conduct three major fundraisers each
year: Wagapalooza (really fun dog show) in May, Christmas
for the Animals (upscale cocktail party at a villa on St John)
in December/January, and a
No Fleas Please flea market in
October. Civic-minded businesses on St John like The Beach
Bar, which dedicates their Bar Wars event to the ACC, help us meet
our goals. Memorial gifts, such as those for
John Baranzano add
immeasurably. In 2010 our budget for Feral Cat
Reduction (food, medical, equipment) is $26,000. Shelter operating
expenses (staff, food, medical, maintenance, utilities and supplies)
total $103,000. Every volunteer hour reduces our expenses by
about $10. Please help us by
becoming an ACC member, donating money
or materials, or most valuable - your time.
