Who is responsible for the care of these animals?
People like you!!! Generous, caring residents, in cooperation with the ACC, volunteer their time, energy and money to provide care for the animals in residence at the shelter. They provide foster homes for animals that are in need of special attention. They help to keep the shelter clean and sanitary and feed and walk the animals daily. They assist at feeding stations for the "bush" cats. They pick up donations and deliver them to the shelter. They do maintenance and construction at the shelter. They spend countless hours doing whatever it takes to help the animals in our care.
Why does the ACC release "bush" cats?
If a cat is found to be healthy after a veterinarian check-up, it is spayed or neutered and then returned to its original location. We have volunteers who provide fresh food and water daily to these cats, and they are no longer reproducing. When we come across a cat that has potential to be adopted we place it at the shelter.
What does the ACC do with abandoned dogs?
If the dog is deemed abandoned, we give it a check-up and treatment at the veterinarian, then it is placed at the shelter and is available for adoption. If the dog appears to be lost or misplaced we attempt to reunite it with its family.
All dogs accepted at the shelter after 9/15/09 are listed on Petfinder

stjohnacc.petfinder.org How long do you keep a dog before
putting it down?
We are a no-kill shelter. We have had dogs stay with us
for almost five years before finding a match. Our dogs are not
locked in cages or kennels for days on end. Every one is taken for a
walk around town, roughly 1/2 mile, twice a day by staff or
volunteers. This is one of our major labor costs, but we care about
our animals and try to give them the kind of care they could expect
when they find their home. Customer survey
We want our shelter to be the best it can be, but we know that
sometimes things are not perfect. If you have visited the ACC,
please take a few moments to tell us about your visit. If things
were perfect we want to hear that as well.
